Lonely Hearts

April 29, 2008 · 1 Comment

These designs were for a project last year which was inspired by the “Soulmates” pages in the Guardian and Religion clothing which I really liked at the time.It was fun trying to photograph them on the dressmaker’s dummy who has wonky breasts since she fell over and squashed one!

So, I got my portfolio handed in and came home where I decided to unpick all the work I’d done over the weekend and re-do it! it was worth it though as it looks much better, the problem being that time is marching on and getting 12 pieces done by May 12th is going to be impossible if I keep unpicking it .
I’m working at home today to save petrol, angry French people are on the radio discussing May’68, they are all talking at once which is so annoying but I’m too lazy to get up and switch it off. If I did I would hear the Curlews swooping about outside and the Swallows who have suddenly reappeared this very morning.

Is it spring yet?

April 28, 2008 · 2 Comments

[

Monday morning blues; I’ve spent all morning trying to speak to a human being about my phone line, you’d think I lived in the middle of nowhere… Here are some views of the crazy frost we had on Witchmountain in February, it was really beautiful. I think it may be Spring now though as the air smells of wild garlic (Bear garlic!) and Balsam Poplar.

These images are part of my Final Major Project, based on Northern myths about bears. I have used various print techniques and embroidery to create designs for children’s fashion.I forgot to mention before that I was lucky enough to be awarded a bursary from the York Embroiderer’s Guild, their website is in my links. Now I really have to go because its hand in day for Professional Practice. And I’ve got too hooked on this blogging lark.x

Encore une fois

April 26, 2008 · 4 Comments

Saturday late afternoon already and I’m supposed to be doing embroidery or sticking portfolio pieces to mount board but I got sidetracked by trying to order broadband. Plusnet.com apparently, so I’ve been told…watch this space.
The week has flown by and the next fortnight will go even faster I guess, as I rush to get everything done. The digital printing yesterday was a bit dissapointing as it turned out the very expensive silk I got from Whaley’s was the meanest meter ever and half the print didn’t fit…lesson number one:size is important, always measure things properly!
Time to return to the glueing; pictures follow shortly.( for those who don’t like words)

“If No One Speaks of Remarkable Things” Jon Mcgregor book of the week “Accelerate” REM music of the week “Encore Une Fois” DJ Sash uplifting moment of the week!)

Owls and rabbits

April 25, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Hello, I’m back in civilization and there’s just time to post a few pictures and write some lines before I have to brave the digital printer, hoping the disc I did last night actually has images on it …

Later today the photographer is coming to take pictures of our work for the catalogue so maybe I should be sewing instead of messing about on here. Meanwhile here is an owl from the last project, embroidered on a vintage wool blanket and dyed using berries and heather which  I boiled up in my cauldron on Witchmountain!

The rabbit is a small experimental sample for this project, printed on wool delaine.

Bye for now .

Saint George’s Day

April 23, 2008 · 1 Comment

Hello, today is St.Georges Day and also my birthday which I am about to celebrate with a pink moon biscuit from Botham’s in Whitby, sent to me by my good friend Helen whose lovely Etsy shop you can visit by going to www.Etsy.com/HelenHats .She uses sea glass to make beautiful jewellery as well as recycling wool to make hats and hooded jumpers.( see pictures above)

I still can’t upload images from my home on the hill so here is another link to look at until i can get back to modern technology.
Hugh Dunford-Wood www.Handmadewallpaper.com is an artist and designer now making hand printed wallpapers and running courses down on the south coast. I used to do freelance work for him, painting silk, way back in the colourful 90’s.
Now its time to get on with a bit of work of my own…

Tuesday morning.

April 22, 2008 · 1 Comment

Did you see the moon last night? It was really lovely, buttery yellow, hanging in the oak tree. Anyway, I’ve come down from the mountain to have another go at putting some pictures on here. This week I’ve been working on the designs for my portfolio which has to be handed in on Monday. No need to panic then.

My very clever brother has been giving me lessons in how to work this thing so here is an image of a water colour by the “quiet man” of the art world, William Tillyer.
Take a look at www.Tillyer.com for more information.

Learning to blog

April 21, 2008 · 4 Comments

Hello,I’m Kim and this blog is to document the last few weeks of my Textiles and Surface Design degree at Cleveland College of Art in glorious scenic Hartlepool.

When I can work out how to do it I will be posting some images of work in progress and links to things I’m inspired by at the moment.Unfortunately its still clockwork internet up here on Witchmountain so it may take a while.
